How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile
Overview
When somebody searches for a service near them, the first thing they see is a map, three listings and a set of star ratings. Everything below that is optional reading.
Your Google Business Profile is what decides whether you appear in that block. It is free, it is entirely under your control, and most businesses leave half of it empty.
Claim it, then complete it
Verification is the gate. Once verified, treat every field as a ranking and conversion signal:
- Exact business name - no keyword stuffing, which gets profiles suspended
- Correct primary category, plus relevant secondary categories
- Address and service area set consistently with your website
- Hours, including special hours for holidays
- Phone number and a link to a page that matches what the searcher wanted
- Services or products listed individually with short descriptions
- Attributes where they exist: accessibility, payment methods, parking
Photos are not decoration
Profiles with recent, real photos get more direction requests and clicks. Upload photographs of the premises, the team and the work - not stock imagery. Add a couple each month rather than thirty at once.
Reviews, on a schedule
Reviews affect both ranking and the decision itself. The practical system is a request at the moment of a good experience, a reply to every review within a few days, and a genuine response to complaints rather than a defensive one.
A five-star profile with three reviews looks less credible than a 4.6 with sixty.
Posts and questions
Weekly posts keep the profile active: an offer, a new service, an article from your site. Questions and answers are worth seeding yourself with the questions customers actually ask, since anyone can answer there.
Tracking
Watch three numbers monthly: calls, direction requests and website clicks from the profile. If impressions rise while clicks do not, the profile is being seen by the wrong searchers and the categories or service descriptions need attention.
Outcome
A complete, current profile with steady reviews is the highest-return local SEO work available - and it takes an afternoon to set up and about ten minutes a week to maintain.
Frequently asked questions
-
Weeks to months, depending on competition. Distance from the searcher, review count and category relevance all matter more than age, but a new profile rarely appears immediately.
-
You can target service areas without listing an address, but you will not appear in the local pack for a city you have no physical presence in. Ranking organically with location pages is the realistic route.
-
Their ranking effect is indirect but real: they keep the profile active and add more surfaces where your business can be clicked from a search result.
